Understand the case of Joca's death

On Monday, 22/04, a 5-year-old Golden Retriever dog, named Joca, died during air transport by Gollog, a subsidiary of Gol. The incident occurred due to a route error at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo. Joca was supposed to be transported from São Paulo to Sinop, in Mato Grosso, but was mistakenly sent to Fortaleza, in Ceará, before returning to Guarulhos. The family accuses the company of negligence, while Gol claims that it accompanied the pet and that the death was unexpected. Upon arrival in Sinop, the guardian, João Fantazzini, was informed that Joca had been sent by mistake to Fortaleza and, upon returning to Guarulhos, discovered that the animal he was dead inside the company's kennel. Gol justified the incorrect sending as the result of an operational failure and stated that Joca received care in Fortaleza, sending photos to the guardian during the stop.

The tragedy that occurred with Joca generated national outrage due to the airline's negligence towards the Golden Retriever. One day later, Gollog, responsible for Gol's air transport, announced the suspension of the transport of animals in the aircraft's cargo compartment.

In addition to Senacon, the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) must participate in the investigations. Senacon formally requested the agency's participation in all procedures related to Joca's case.

However, it is essential to remember that Anac does not regulate the air transport of animals, except in the case of guide dogs. Resolution 280 of 2013 allows visually impaired passengers to travel with these animals in the cabin. However, this rule does not apply to Joca's case.

In view of this, Secretary Wadih Damous highlighted the importance of Anac establishing specific regulations for the transport of pets.

“For all the reasons presented, we will recommend that Anac regulate the transport of pets and we will request Senacon’s participation in the drafting of this regulation,” he stated.

Senacon also clarifies that each airline has its own rules for transporting animals, including size and weight criteria for traveling in the cabin or cargo compartment of the aircraft. Gollog states that its guidelines for transporting animals in cargo follow the International Air Transport Association (IATA) manual.

However, it is important to highlight that bus companies throughout Brazil have a horrible policy regarding the transport of animals. Many refuse to transport pets, and those that do place both large and small animals in cages in the bus's luggage compartment, without adequate supervision.

Animal guardians protest at airports and bus companies also have a policy of mistreating animals

Animal owners across Brazil have faced difficulties with the policies of transport companies, which often refuse to allow pets to accompany their owners on trips. Those who accept often subject the animals to inadequate conditions, such as confinement in cages in the cargo compartment of buses and drug addicts, in other words, bureaucracy and ill will that often leads the owner to see the extent of his animal friend's suffering. pet gives up traveling and the bus company doesn't care or consider the well-being and safety of the pets.

Protests

In addition, there has been a wave of protests by animal owners across the country. Following Joca's case, the internet has been flooded with reports of possible cases of animal abuse, including shocking videos highlighting the inhumane conditions these animals face during transport.

Given this scenario, it is essential that authorities take strict measures to ensure the safety and well-being of animals during transport. It's time for transport companies to take responsibility and establish more humane and safe policies for transporting pets.

“GOL deeply regrets what happened to the dog Joca and sympathizes with his owner's pain. The Company informs that the dog Joca should have gone to Sinop (OPS), on flight 1480 on 04/22, from Guarulhos (GRU), however, due to an operational failure the animal was boarded on a flight to Fortaleza (FOR ).

As soon as the tutor arrived in Sinop, he was notified about what had happened and his choice was to return to Guarulhos (GRU) to meet Joca again.

The GOLLOG team in the capital of Ceará disembarked the Joca and took care of it until it boarded flight 1527 back to Guarulhos (GRU). During this period, records of Joca being accommodated back on the aircraft were sent to the guardian. Unfortunately, shortly after the flight landed at Guarulhos airport (GRU), coming from Fortaleza, we were surprised by the death of the animal.

The Company is offering all the necessary support to the tutor and the investigation of the details of what happened is being carried out with full priority by our team. We sympathize with the suffering of Joca's tutor. We understand his pain and are deeply sorry for the loss of your pet.”
